If you have a WAP-enabled phone, just point your browser to Upoc.com.
The WAP site offers all of the same features as the Web site.

or to individuals in your groups.

Upoc messages get delivered to your phone as text (SMS) messages.
You can also send SMS to groups, or privately to other members
that you meet. If you want to unsubscribe or invite new people
to a group, you can do that directly from your mobile phone using SMS.

If your carrier is not listed, Premium services are not available
to you at this time. Check back soon!
Your home page is customized just for you -- giving you immediate access
to anything you want to do on Upoc. It also displays your
groups, channels,
settings, and alerts
so you can get right to them.
Alerts
Alerts are things you need to take care of:
- Invites to join groups and/or channels which you've been sent
- Other members' requests to join groups you've started
- A reminder to turn messaging On if you had turned it Off
Find a Member
On the Members panel, click the "Find a Member" link. You'll be taken
to a page where you can search for a member by entering the member's
handle, or search by hobbies & interests. You can narrow your
search results by entering an age range, state and gender. If the person
you are searching for is a Upoc member, we'll display their handle.
Click on the handle and you'll be taken to his Profile page.
From there, you can find out more information and see what groups
and channels he belongs to. You can even send him/her a message if you like.
Address Book
Adding members to your address book allows you to quickly send a message to others.
Once you add members to your address book, they will appear in the pulldown
list on the "Send a Message" page, accessible from the Messages panel
on every page of Upoc.com.
You can remove someone from your address book at any time by clicking
the "remove" button on your "Address Book" page. Removing someone
from your address book does not mean he/she will not be able to send you messages.
Block List
Your block list is a way to prevent unwanted messages from those Upoc
members you don't want to hear from -- ever!
To add someone to your Block List, click "Block List" under the
Members panel from the top nav. Once on your "Add to Your Block List"
page, simply type in the Upoc handle of the member you wish to silence
(or click "search" if you don't know it) and click "block."
You will not receive any messages from anyone on your block list,
including messages they send to any groups you share. The best part
is, people you have blocked will not know that you have blocked
their messages from reaching you, so be sure not to tell them you are blocking them.
You can remove someone from your block list by clicking the
"Unblock" button next to their name. Once you remove someone
from your block list, they will once again be able to send you messages.
Groups are communities created by members and are made up of people
who exchange messages with each other. Anyone can start a group.
Members can send messages to the entire group or to any
individual member of the group. There are three types of groups
-- chat, connection and broadcast:
- In a chat group,
any member can send messages, and replies go to all members
- In a connection group,
any member can send messages, and replies go to sender
- In a broadcast group,
only the group owner can send, and replies go to owner
Groups are further divided into how membership is handled. Groups
can be public, private or secret:
- If a group is public, anyone can
join (no approval required for membership)
- If a group is private, anyone can
ask to join, but the group founder still has the final say on who gets in
- If a group is secret, you can
only get in if you get an invite from one of the group members
Finding Groups on Upoc.com
Make new friends by joining a public group. Check out the "Featured Groups"
on your home page or go to "Browse Communities." Under each category,
the most popular groups are listed first. Read the first sentence or
so of the group description, and when you find one that interests you,
just click on the name of the group to learn more about them.
You can also find groups using a keyword. Just click "Find a Group" under the Members panel on the top nav. Enter your search terms and click "Search." Note that secret groups won't show up in your search, since membership is by invitation only.
Joining Groups
Via Upoc.com
Basically, there are three ways to get into a group:
- To join public groups, just click "Join" (no permissions or invitations are needed)
- If a group is private, click "Ask to Join," or someone in the group can send you an invite
- If the group is secret, you can only get in if someone sends you an invite
Via SMS
If someone sends you an invite, you can accept
right from your phone just by replying to that message.
Browsing Romance Groups
If you are age 18 or over, and you have a validated phone on Upoc, you will be eligible to purchase a Romance Message History subscription, which will allow you to browse the message history of all Romance groups on the upoc.com website and wireless web site.
Browsing message history allows you to check out groups without actually joining them. That way, you can get a sense of the chat topics and the messaging volume before becoming a member.
When you join a Romance group, you get to enjoy the convenience of receiving group messages to your phone, via SMS. However, even as a group member, you will not be able to view the message history for that group without subscribing to do so.
If you are an owner of a Romance group, you will not be subject to the subscription fee for that group. You will, however, need to purchase a subscription to view the message history of Romance groups you do not own.
Please note that this service may not be available on all carriers.
Via SMS
- Send the word "JOIN" plus the group handle, not the group name (ex. JOIN dailyquip), to 8762.
- You will receive an SMS stating the charges that apply to members of that group.
- Reply OK and you will be joined. You will then receive a
confirmation SMS letting you know your account has been
charged. Please note that if you quit any Upoc Premium group or channel and wish to rejoin, you will have to pay the subscription fee again.
Via WAP
- Go to Groups > Find a Group and when you locate the group you want to join, go to "Join."
- Reply OK to the SMS and you will receive confirmation that
you have successfully joined and that your account has been
charged.
Your Groups
The groups you belong to are listed on your Communities page and the
"My Communities" panel on your personal page. These pages give you
access to all the things you can do as a member and/or founder:
- View your group's home page, where you can read/send messages
- Invite others into your group
- Turn your group messages On and Off
- Quit your group
- Manage groups you own
Starting Groups
When you start a group, you call all the shots. Just go to the
Communities section on Upoc.com and click "Start a Group."
As group founder, you will then be prompted to choose what type of group
you want to create -- a chat group, a connection group or a broadcast group:
- In a chat group,
any member can send messages, and replies go to all members
- In a connection group,
any member can send messages, and replies go to sender
- In a broadcast group,
only the group owner can send, and replies go to owner
As group founder, you also get to choose your group name, group handle
(the abbreviation that members will see as the "sender"
in text messages from this group) and group description.
Next, you decide if you'd like your group to be public, private or secret:
- If a group is public,
anyone can join (no approval required for membership)
- If a group is private,
anyone can ask to join, but the group founder still has the final say on who gets in
- If a group is secret,
you can only get in if you get an invite from one of the group members
You also get to choose the following:
- Who can invite others: all members or just you
- If your group allows voice messages
- If your group allows picture messages (MMS)
- If your group allows polls
- If you'd like to display the member list
Categorizing your group so that people with similar interests
can find it is highly recommended. If you like, you can choose
to skip categorizing your group -- and that's it! You'll get a
"Congratulations on your new group" message right away.
Now you're ready to invite others to join!
Managing Groups You Own
As a group founder, there are several things that you, and only you, can do.
Groups that you've started will be marked with an asterisk inside the
"My Communities" panel. Clicking on the group name will take you to its detail page.
Click on the "Manage" button and you'll be taken to the Group Manage page,
which allows you to do all of the stuff you need to do as a group founder,
such as:
Take care of membership requests
If you chose to allow anyone to send invites, all of your group
members can send invitations to your group.
However, as group founder, only you handle requests to join your group.
So how do you know whether to let someone in? Well, if you don't
personally know the "candidate," start by checking out his or her profile.
Once you're ready to make a decision, you can approve or deny memberships
on the Group Manage page.
Boot unwanted members
If any members are being disruptive, you, as the group owner, are the one with
the power to boot them from the group. You might want to warn them first with
a message to give them a chance to stop their disruptive actions.
If the disruptive member continues his or her actions, you can boot
them from your "Manage Members" page, by going to the member's profile
directly, or by selecting the member's handle from the group message history.
Find the member(s) you want to kick out and click the "Boot"
link next to their handle.
You will then be prompted to select how you want to handle
the boot notification. For broadcast groups, notification
will only be sent to the booted member. For chat and
connection groups, boot notifications will be either
Public (in which notification is sent to all members)
or Private (only the booted member is notified).
Disband your group
You cannot quit any group you've started. If you decide you
no longer wish to manage a group, you must disband
it by clicking the "Disband" button next to the group
name you wish to disband on the "My Communities" page.
When you disband your group, all the members will
receive a text message letting them know that the
group no longer exists.
What you're not responsible for
Group founders do not moderate groups or approve messages
before they are sent out. Anyone in public groups can send
a message to anyone else in the group or to the entire group.
If a group member is sending excessive or inappropriate
messages, you are the only group member with the power
to boot him/her from your group.
When you join a group, you should make sure to read the group description.
Here, you'll often find useful information on what types of messages
are acceptable and what types are not. Additionally, you should read
through some of the group message history before you send a message
to get a better idea of what types of messages people generally
send out. Note that if the group founder doesn't like the
content of the messages you send out, he/she has the right
to boot you out of the group. If you think you've been unjustly
booted, please send a message to the group founder. For more info
on proper message etiquette, check out Upoc
textiquette.
Channels are official wireless sites from your favorite people like Bow Wow,
Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez. Here, you can get news about special deals,
or text messages from the stars you love, right on your cell phone.
Joining Channels
To join a channel, just click the "Join" button from the channel home
page or the channel directory. You can access the channel directory from the
"Find a Channel" link under the Communities panel, or from the "My Communities"
panel on your home page.
If someone sends you an invite
to join a channel, you can accept right
from your phone just by replying to that message. You can also send the word
"Join" (no quotes needed) followed by the channel handle to the main
Upoc shortcode, 8762.
For example, if you want to join a channel whose handle is "Fabolous,"
just send "JOIN Fabolous" to the shortcode 8762.
Via SMS
- Send the word "JOIN" plus the channel handle, not the channel name (ex. JOIN biblequote), to 8762.
- You will receive an SMS stating the charges that apply to members of that channel.
- Reply OK and you will be joined. You will then receive a
confirmation SMS letting you know your account has been
charged.
Via WAP
- Go to Channels > Find a Channels and when you locate the channel you want to join, go to "Join."
- Reply OK to the SMS and you will receive confirmation that
you have successfully joined and that your account has been
charged.
Your Channels
Now that you've joined a channel, it will appear on your home page
in the "My Communities" panel and on your "My Communities" page. You can:
- View any of your channel home pages
- Turn messaging On or Off
- Tailor your message options by channel via "Config" button
- Quit a channel you're no longer interested in

Sending Text Messages on Upoc.com
Your Message Inbox shows all your messages for the past three days.
There is no way to delete messages from your inbox, but don't worry:
they disappear automatically after three days.
Sending text messages from the Web is easy -- the way to go
when you are already online. Use the "Send a Message" link
from the Messages panel on your home page. You can select recipients
from a dropdown list of "My Groups" or your address book. Now,
just type your message and press "Send" when you're done.
There are a number of other ways you can send a message
from the Web site. You can use the "Send a Message" box
from the group page of any group you belong to or you can
hit "reply" or "forward" from a message in your
Message History. You won't even have to choose a
recipient; it's automatically filled in for you!
Sending Text Messages from Your Phone
Some wireless phone companies allow their users to send messages
(SMS or e-mail) from their phones. Not all phones are capable
of sending messages. Check with your carrier to see whether
you have a phone that is capable of sending text messages.
Or, click here for a list of carriers. If your
phone has an Internet (WAP) browser, you can point
it to Upoc.com and log in with your handle and password.
Then you can send messages from Upoc on your phone.
If you are a Sprint PCS subscriber,
instructions on using Upoc.
Sending via e-mail
To send a message as an e-mail to a group, you need to send to
the group handle as it appears on the group description page.
For example, if you are a member of a group whose handle
is "My_Friends," the e-mail address will be my_friends@upoc.com.
Note that the group handle is different than the group's name.
You cannot send messages to a group of which you are not a member.
To send a message as an e-mail to a friend, use the e-mail format:
friend'shandle@upoc.com.
Please note that in order to send a Upoc message from your
e-mail address, you must first register and validate your
e-mail by going to Settings and entering it in your Upoc profile.
You will be sent a validation message to your e-mail, and you
can either reply to it or click the link within the message
to verify that it is a valid e-mail address.
Remember that messages can only be 120 characters long.
It is much easier to check the message length if you send
from Upoc, but if you use your e-mail program, be aware of
the limit.
Quick tip:
If your phone can send messages, you can add your Upoc friends and groups'
names to your phone's address book. Then you can shoot off a celeb sighting
or message your buddy to tell them you'll be late with no hassle! No need to
log in to the Web to send a message.
Then when you create a message, you can choose to send it to one of
your phone's address book entries, and select their Upoc address as
the target. That way you can chat right from your phone, without
logging in to the Web.
Sending messages to groups
When you join a group, you will be sent a text shortcut.
Keep this message in your phone's inbox or phonebook,
and reply to it any time to send a message to that group.
You can actually store the number like it was one of
your friends' numbers. Create a new contact and call
it the group's name; save that number to it.
Then whenever you create a message, choose that
contact as the recipient.
If you accidentally delete the shortcut, go to Upoc
to have another sent to your phone. Log onto Upoc.com,
go to the group's page and click on the link that says,
"Send me an SMS shortcut."
How to send a message to a group without a shortcut:
Create a message of 120 characters or less using this format:
grouphandle:your message
Don't forget the colon!
Here's an example: To send a message to the group handle
"Chat4Fun," just type:
Chat4Fun:NE1 want 2 chat?
- Select "OK" or "Send"
- Input Upoc's main shortcut code as the destination number: 8762
- Select "OK" or "Send"
- Note: The group handle can be found on the group page under "My Communities"
How to reply to a member's message to a group:
- Select "Reply" to the member's group message
- Compose a 120-character (or less) message
The message will go to the member, not the group
Sending a message to another Upoc member
How to send a message to a member without a shortcut:
Create a message of 120-characters (or less) using this format:
handle:your message
Here's an example: To send a message to a Upoc member "tigger42," just type:
tigger42:Hi! Wanna meet later?
- Select "OK" or "Send"
- Input Upoc's main shortcut code as the destination number: 8762
- Select "OK" or "Send"
How to reply to a message from another Upoc member:
- Select "Reply" to the message
- Input a 120-character message and hit "OK" or "Send"
Sending Messages Via WAP
If you have an Internet-enabled phone, point your phone's browser to www.Upoc.com.
The first time you use the site, you will have to log in with
your number and password. From the Main Menu, press 1 to send a message.
Next press 1 to send a message to a group, or 2 to send
a message to an individual member.
If you choose 1, "Send a Message to a Group," you will be presented
with a list of 9 groups that you belong to as well as the option
to see "More" groups, or the option to "Find a Group." Each group
has a number next to it. Press the number of the group you wish to
send a message to. If you select "Find a Group," you will be able
to search for a group, and when found, select that group to
send a message to.
If you choose 2, "Send a Message to a Member," you will be
presented with a list of 9 members in your address book as
well as the option to see "More" members in your address book,
or the option to "Find a Member." Each member has a number
next to it. Press the number of the individual you wish to
send a message to. If you select "Find a Member," you will
be able to search for a member, and when found, select
that member to send a message to.
Once you've selected your message recipient, simply compose
your message with your phone's keypad. This is similar to
the way you input names and phone numbers on your mobile
phone. You enter letters and numbers by pressing the
appropriate keys on your phone.
Each key has more than one value. For example,
pressing the 2 key once gives you the letter A. Twice gives
you the letter B. Four times is the number 2. Five times
and you're back to A. Once you've finished typing your message
(remember, 120 characters max!), press "Send" and
your message will go out.
Sending Polls
A great way to start a good chat is to send a poll. Polls
can be about any topic, but keep in mind that if you
are sending one to a specialized group, you should stay
away from posting off-topic polls.
To send a poll, log on to Upoc.com and go to "Send a Poll"
under the Messages tab. There, you will be able to choose
what group to which you want to send the poll. Please note
that the group you choose must be one that allows polls
(if it does not, you will receive an error message and
your poll won't be sent). You also choose what question
you want to pose, up to five possible answers and
how much time you want to allow for voting --
anywhere from 30 minutes to three days.
When you are finished selecting, click "Preview."
Click "Edit" to make any changes, or if everything
looks good, click "Send" and your poll will be sent!
Voice messaging adds another dimension to your Upoc experience.
You can get channel messages like song clips from your favorite
artists, plus voice messages from groups and individual members.
You can also send voice messages to your groups or to individual
members in your address book.
In order to use Upoc's Voice Message System, you must have
registered and validated your mobile phone with Upoc (if you
haven't done so, go to Settings). Then dial 973-242-1550
and log in with your 10-digit mobile phone number and your
password. When you have successfully logged in, you will
be in the Main Menu.
Voice Chat Subscription
To use Upoc's Voice Message System to exchange voice messages with
your groups and members in your address book, you must also subscribe
to Voice Chat. To subscribe, call 973-242-1550 or
and hit the "join" button.
You can cancel anytime in any of the following ways:
- Log in at Upoc.com, go to My Communities, check the box next to
Upoc Voice Chat, and select "Quit Checked"
- Call 973-242-1550, log in with your 10-digit mobile number and
Upoc password and select Cancel Voice Chat Subscription from the Main
Menu.
- You will receive a billing reminder one day before you are billed
for the next month's subscription. Reply QUIT to that message.
Listening to Channel Voice Messages
When you have a new voice message, we'll send a text
message to your cell phone letting you know. To
listen, call the number in the message, or just log in at Upoc.com and
click the voice message link in your "Alerts" panel.
Voice messages will also appear in your message history on
Upoc.com, just like text messages. Channel message history goes back
30 days.
Listening to Group and Personal Voice Messages
When you have a new voice message, we'll send a text
message to your cell phone letting you know. To
listen, access our Voice Message System by calling
973-242-1550, or just log in at Upoc.com and
click the voice message link in your "Alerts" panel.
Voice messages will also appear in your message history on
Upoc.com, just like text messages. Group message history
and your personal message history go back three days.
Sending Voice Messages
To send a voice message to one of your groups or
to someone in your address book, call 973-242-1550 and log in with
your 10-digit mobile number and password. If you're not already
subscribed to Voice Chat, you'll be prompted to join.
From the Main Menu, press 1 and follow the simple instructions.
Once you select the handle of the member or group you're sending to,
it's just like leaving a message on someone's answering
machine or voicemail.
Choose your message recipient
Next you will decide if you want to send a message to a
group or an individual. To send a message to a group, press
1. To send a message to an individual, press 2.
If you choose 1, "Send a Message to a Group," you will be
presented with a list of the groups that you belong to.
Each group will correspond to a number. Press the number
that corresponds to the group you want to send a message
to. If you belong to more than 9 groups, you can press "#"
(pound) to hear the next nine groups.
If you choose 2, "Send a Message to an Individual," you must
enter up to five characters of the user's handle. After you
have done this, the Voice Message System will search through
your address book for a handle that matches. Each handle will
correspond to a number. Press the number that corresponds to
the individual's handle that you want to send a message to.
If there are no matching handles in your address book, you
can press 1 to search all the matching handles in Upoc.
After you select a group or individual to send a message to,
you must press 2 to send a text message. Once you do that,
you are ready to compose your message.
Compose your message
Composing a message on Upoc's Voice Message System is similar
to the way you input names and phone numbers on your mobile phone.
You enter letters and numbers by pressing the appropriate keys
on your phone. It's easy. Each key -- except the "*" (asterisk)
key, which is backspace -- has more than one value. For example,
pressing the 2 key once gives you the letter A. Twice gives
you the letter B. Four times is the number 2. Five times
and you're back to A. When you hear the letter or number
you want to use, just hit the pound key to advance to
the next letter.
To enter a space to separate words, press pound twice
(once to advance to the next letter, once again to indicate
the end of a word). Once you do, you'll hear the word
repeated back to you. To backspace, press the star key.
You can find punctuation on the 1 key. Keep pressing 1
and you'll hear a selection of punctuation marks.
Hit 0 for the number zero, and for a list of common phrases
like "running late." You can review your message at any time
by pressing pound three times. You can then send your message,
continue it or start again.
Remember, there's a 120-character limit on these messages, too.
When your message is finished, press pound three times after
entering the last letter (ie., once to advance to the
next letter, once again to indicate the end of the word,
and a third time to indicate the end of the message).
Here's a guide to the different values for each key.

If you're MMS-capable, when you join a group that
has MMS turned on (on the group details page it
will say "allows pics"), you'll get an MMS from
the group that you can store in your address book
for easy sending. Replying to that MMS will send
a message to the group, so save the e-mail
address in it under your group's name.

MMS Alerts |
| |
If you want to be warned via SMS before downloading an
MMS, you should go to the "My Messages" link under the
Settings panel. Check the box next to "Alert me before
delivering MMS."
When a new MMS is sent to you or a group you're in,
you will receive a notification MMS telling you

Your carrier may limit the size of messages you can send.

Make sure that the total message size is below 100k --

It's easy to invite friends to join your groups and channels,
whether they're Upoc members or not.
Sending Invites
Here's how to send an invite:
- From Upoc.com, log in and click the "Send an Invitation" link
under the Members panel. Select the group or channel from the
dropdown list and enter your friend's mobile phone number.
Note: this must be a 10-digit mobile phone number in the
United States or Canada. If you do not know your friend's
mobile number, then just enter their e-mail address and
we'll send an invitation by e-mail. You can also invite
an existing Upoc member by entering their Upoc handle.
- Via SMS: Reply to the group shortcut message with the word
"invite" and your friend's mobile phone number or Upoc handle.
We'll send your friend an invitation via SMS.
Example: "invite 9175551212"
- By going to your address book, you can also select
one or more members to invite to a specific group or channel.
